Automatic Coop Door Guide: Setup, Safety, and Troubleshooting
Welcome to the guide for your Automatic Coop Door. This smart, battery-powered door is designed to keep your flock secure and save you time, with seamless automatic operations based on natural light detection. Below, you'll find detailed instructions on how to set up, operate, maintain, and troubleshoot your door, ensuring a reliable and safe experience for both you and your chickens.
1. Indicator Light and Safety Features
The Automatic Coop Door features a light indicator and built-in safety mechanisms to ensure smooth operation while protecting your chickens.
- Green Light: When the door is moving up (opening), the indicator light will shine green.
- Red Light: When the door is moving down (closing), the indicator light will shine red.
- Blue Blinking Light: Indicates “preparation” mode, meaning the door will soon open or close based on the sensor’s reading of natural light changes.
Safety Mechanism: The door includes an anti-pinch system that automatically stops the door if it detects resistance. This prevents the door from closing if an object or a chicken is in the way.
2. Battery Information
The Automatic Coop Door is powered by two AA NiMh rechargeable batteries, providing optimal voltage for reliable operation. Proper battery use is essential for smooth, long-lasting performance.
Battery Type: Use only two NiMh rechargeable AA batteries (DC 1.2V). Duracell NiMh rechargeable batteries are recommended.
Battery Installation:
- Open the battery compartment located on the door’s drive unit.
- Insert the batteries, ensuring correct polarity alignment with the plus (+) and minus (-) signs on the battery holder.
Close the battery compartment securely.
Battery Replacement:
- A red blinking light indicates that the batteries are low and should be replaced soon. When the batteries are completely depleted, the door will remain closed to ensure security.
- To replace batteries:
- Open the battery compartment.
- Remove old batteries and insert two fresh NiMh AA rechargeable batteries.
Test the door to ensure proper operation after battery replacement.
Important Tips:
- Use only high-quality, rechargeable batteries to prevent voltage-related issues.
- Remove batteries if the door will not be used for extended periods to prevent battery leakage.
3. Door Operation Modes
The Automatic Coop Door has several operation modes designed to accommodate a variety of use cases and customer needs. We recommend using the default automatic mode, which is used by nearly all of our customers (and by Coop HQ, with all of our 37 chickens). This mode is calibrated to align with chickens' natural routines and typically requires no adjustments unless under specific conditions, such as extreme weather or interference from infrared (IR) lighting.
Automatic Opening and Closing (Factory Mode)
- In factory mode, the door operates automatically, opening every morning 20 minutes after sunrise and closing 20 minutes after sunset. The door’s light sensor detects natural light changes, ensuring it is responsive to sunrise and sunset in your location.
- Note: The sensor only detects natural light, so it will not respond to artificial lights like street lamps or flashlights.
Manual Operation
If needed, you can manually open or close the door by pressing the button located near the battery compartment.
- Green Light (Up): Press the button to open the door. The indicator light will shine green as it opens.
- Red Light (Down): Press the button to close the door. The indicator light will shine red as it closes.
- Stop Mid-Motion: Press the button again to stop the door while it is in motion.
Return to Automatic Mode: After manual operation, the door will return to automatic mode after 20 minutes.
4. Troubleshooting Common Issues
Here are solutions to common issues that may arise with the Automatic Coop Door.
Door Won't Open or Close
- Check the Batteries:
- A red blinking light indicates low or empty batteries. Replace with new rechargeable AA NiMh batteries.
- Reset the Door:
- If a software error occurs, reset the door to factory settings. Press and hold the button for 15 seconds until the light blinks green, red, and blue.
- Alternatively, remove the batteries for 1 minute, then reinsert them to reboot.
Sensor Issues and Artificial Light Interference
The Automatic Coop Door relies on a light sensor to detect day and night. Artificial lights, such as infrared (IR) cameras or heat lamps, may interfere with its operation.
- Solution: Ensure the door is not directly exposed to IR lights or heat lamps. For doors mounted inside the coop, make sure the sensor faces a natural light source.
Door Freezes in Cold Weather
The door is built to withstand temperatures from -15°F to 140°F. However, in extremely cold conditions, frost or ice may affect its operation.
- Solution: If the door freezes, carefully thaw it out before attempting to open or close it.
- Recommendation: Installing a small canopy over the door can help protect it from heavy snowfall and frost buildup, ensuring smooth operation in winter.
5. Maintenance and Care Tips
Routine maintenance is essential for keeping the Automatic Coop Door in top condition and extending its lifespan.
- Regular Cleaning:
- Wipe down the door and tracks with a damp cloth to remove dirt or debris. Avoid using lubricants, as they may damage the internal mechanism.
In winter, ensure the door is free of ice or snow buildup, which can obstruct movement.
Battery Care:
Replace batteries once a year or as needed. Regularly check battery health, especially in colder months, as batteries may deplete more quickly in low temperatures.
Safe Disposal:
- When batteries are no longer usable, remove them and dispose of them according to local regulations. Avoid short-circuiting the terminals to prevent damage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- What should I do if the door doesn’t open or close at the expected times?
Check the batteries and replace them if the red light is blinking. Make sure the sensor is not obstructed or influenced by artificial light.
How do I reset the door to factory settings?
Press and hold the button for 15 seconds until the light cycles through green, red, and blue. Alternatively, remove the batteries for 1 minute and reinstall them.
Can I use non-rechargeable or lithium batteries?
No, only use NiMh rechargeable AA batteries with a 1.2V rating. Non-rechargeable or lithium batteries can cause operational issues due to incorrect voltage levels.
Is the door safe for my chickens?
- Yes, the door has an anti-pinch safety mechanism that stops it if it senses resistance. This prevents harm to your chickens while ensuring secure operation.
